The Coach - Alice Wong

Started as an ordinary person just like anyone else, Alice loves to sing and dance ever since she was a child. Although been performing in school choir, she didn't have any opportunity to be have any proper vocal training when she was young.

In 1995, Alice went to a commercial music school to learn basic vocalising theories and singing Mandarin pop songs, and spent a year of private vocal training under a classical opera teacher. Throughout the years, she performed in different set ups such as Mandarin pop choir, charity shows, musicals, Chinese "min ge" restaurant (i.e. restaurants with live "unplugged" music performance), cruise performance, as well as English contemporary church choir.

After many years, she got to know Speech Level Singing^TM (SLS) through a workshop, and was amazed at how the technique could fix different types of voices in an accelerated manner, and could be applied to different genres of songs. Due to her work nature as a trainer, where heavy usage of her voice was required, Alice truely experienced how SLS could help her in protecting her voice in both singing and speech.

With personal training under different SLS Master Instructors (including Seth Riggs), Alice is now a certified Speech Level Singing^TM Instructor in Singapore.

“I’ve been taught by Miss Alice Wong for about three months. From the start, I have difficulties in vocal projection and in sustaining belted notes. I have little knowledge about my vocal abilities and vocal range.

She began to strengthen my chest voice by teaching me to do some vocal exercises... At the later stages, I have a more stabilized chest voice to sustain my vocal projection, and have also learnt a lot from her... such as vibrato, pronunciation, diction and more. "Passion Vocal Studio transformed my singing.

When I was a child, I could not sing in tune. I was told that I was not born with the gift for singing. It saddened me as I wished I could express my emotions and appreciation for music like everyone else. As I grew up, I did not dare to sing in front of others, and shied away from every opportunity that involved singing. However, the beauty of music and singing never stopped charming me, and I never gave up the dream to sing.

My singing journey began at Passion Vocal Studio

Alice made me believe that I can sing. ... ... What in fact are lacking are the right training and exercise. Learning to use one’s voice is the same as learning any new sport. It takes time and the right coaching.

On top of the knowledge about larynx and vocal chords, Alice prescribed customized exercises for my voice during each weekly sessions aiming at helping me to gain control over my voice. At the end of each session, I could practice to the recording of the lesson to internalize what was taught during the lesson.

After a few sessions when she deemed my voice to be steady, Alice taught me to apply the acquired techniques to singing songs of my choice. Yesterday, as I was listening back to the recordings of my first lesson, I was pleasantly surprised at how much progress I have made. After just five months of training, I have become much more skilled and confident at vocalizing.

"I am taking vocal class at Passion Vocal Studio to improve my singing voice for personal worship sessions at home since I have been learning to worship the Lord with guitar or keyboard.

This training differs from a previous beginner vocal course I took in another organisation. It teaches me to sing as naturally as I would when speaking, without having to strain my vocal cords when singing high notes. After about two months of practising scales with vowel sounds, I was able to pitch my voice at different notes more accurately and reach high notes more confidently. As I moved on to song application, I found I could sing with ease and I am learning to pronounce the words of the lyrics better.
